Perth Youth Futsal Winter 2003 League Cup

The Perth Youth Futsal Winter Cup was held at Bells Sports Centre last Friday night and it proved to be a night of action, drama, suspense and surprises, which was enjoyed by all. A strong turnout of 18 teams, along with a healthy crowd, ensured there was a good atmosphere and plenty of competition for the trophies on offer.

Among the surprises in the U14 Cup was the fact that highly fancied Flamenco, Gannochy Saints and Tartan Army failed to make it into the quarter finals. Tournament favourites Guildtown, who play in the U15 11-a-side league, were made to work extremely hard to reach the final, none more so than by Nazzurri who held them to a goal-less draw in their quarter final encounter and only lost by virtue of a sudden death penalty shootout. Barca Boys also reached the final, playing some attractive futsal along the way but they also had to endure a nervous path, as they emerged victorious over Scorpions in a sudden death penalty shootout. In the final, an early lead for Guildtown was to prove significant. As Barca Boys tried to get an equaliser, they left gaps at the back which were fully exploited by their opponents, and this proved to be their downfall, despite playing some attractive futsal.

In the U18 Cup, previous winners Belgian Five were unable to qualify out from a tough group, losing a crunch group game to eventual finalists FC Sweden. There was plenty of action and drama in the semi finals as FC Sweden managed to squeeze by Gannochy, whilst in the other semi final Camelot Oakbank defeated their great rivals Camelot Academy with a last minute screamer into the top corner.

This tremendous victory spurred on Camelot Oakbank and they proceeded to dominate a one-sided final against FC Sweden, with an astonishing display of long range power shooting.
